In 2015 singer and worship leader Jonathan Singh released his album entitled City Love Music. Singh has now teamed up with his sister, Kristina Plush, to form a duo going by the same name -- stylized citylovemusic. The name means "to be a City on a hill, to Love God and His people, and make Music that reflects Christ." The pair released their first EP together last year, but they are already back in 2017 with another EP. Their newest effort is a rather standard modern worship release, highlighted mostly by fantastic vocals; each of the siblings have wonderful voices. "Satisfy" starts the EP with a piano and a lightly overdriven electric guitar. Singh sings, "Father we come with expectations (expectations); we know You love will overcome all our burdens (all our burdens). There is power in Your name; forever Your kingdom will reign." You start to feel the true dynamic the two have when Plush comes in with beautiful harmonies a little later in the song. The lead single, "Exalt Your Name (based in the book of Psalms)," is next up and is a bit more subdued than the opener. Plush takes lead on the song that encourages the whole earth to praise and directly lifts up the name of the Lord. "Look to the Son" picks the tempo back up with Singh taking the lead again. The song inspires us to look to Jesus in everything and every situation. "Nothing Worth More" finds the album slowing down again for Plush to sing the prettiest song on the EP. The song reminds us that nothing is worth more than our Savior as Plush sings, "There's nothing worth more; it's Your name I will adore. Your love gives me life; Jesus I will run to You." This is the best song on the release and very likely the most ready to be inserted into a church worship service. The EP ends with an alternate version of "Satisfy," featuring rapper Young Noah. The guitar lick is overlaid with a slick drum beat, and while musically it doesn't scream "hip-hop," the beat does set up Young Noah's appearance nicely. While introducing a rapper into a CCM song has become the norm these days, citylovemusic and Young Noah execute the gambit better than many others have in the past. Noah has a small spoken word section set to a very airy piece of music before going into his rap which actually complements the music. citylovemusic have produced a very palatable and accessible album. There weren't any risks taken, but instead the duo rely on their ability and strong vocal harmonies. While it's doubtful listeners will be blown away by any particular aspect, there aren't many arguable weaknesses either. Fan of Chris Tomlin, MercyMe, and the like are sure to adore the EP. "Nothing Worth More" showcases the best of what citylovemusic has to offer and is a great starting place if you're interested in checking out a new worship EP.
