It's been about a year since indie project Daylight got together, and they already have a seven-song EP entitled Behold The King. Taking their name from 1 Thessalonians 5:5, the sixpiece worship team takes their music to the areas surrounding their home in British Columbia, Canada, seeking to reach today's youth. What they've compiled on Behold The King is a batch of songs crafted into the most popular form of worship music - namely a huge pop rock feel with a little bit of quasi-pop punk thrown in here and there. The more upbeat stuff occurs in "The Curtain," "I Count It Joy" and "King of Glory," the latter song being the rockiest of the three and the first one bearing a slight Coldplay resemblance. The other four songs are toned down a bit more. "Behold The King" and "We Praise You God" feel pretty similar for the most part, though you can tell the difference between the two pretty easily. "At The Name of Jesus" does a good job of utilizing a somewhat anthemic chorus while also bringing the tempo down for the last song, "Holy Spirit Fill Me Up," which works rather well for the closing track. The bandmates seem to really pour out their hearts through their music and lyrics, but I couldn't help but notice that it all still seems a little too formulaic, mainly from a musical perspective. I would love to hear what they could do with a little experimentation in that field. If they can mix that with their obvious passion, talent and musicianship, Daylight could be one of the better worship bands out there. But even with what they have now, I wouldn't be surprised to find them signing to a record label like Come & Live sometime in the future.
