Destination: Beautiful

It isn't hard to argue that Destination: Beautiful is the weakest Mae album. Hypothetically, isn't that what we want for all artists -- to have an upward trajectory from their debut? Even Mae's immediate follow-up, a b-side collection featuring improved versions of these tracks, is decidedly better than Beautiful, which I'm sure most people wrote off in 2003 as a pretty obvious knock-off of early Jimmy Eat World. However, in hindsight, this debut album displays many of the quintessential Mae-isms in inkling form: brilliant ideas and beautiful soundscapes that were more fully realized later, especially on The Everglow and (e)vening. The genre mixing and the mathy time signatures go down almost too smoothly with these songs, creating a set that's so subtle, it's easy to be unimpressed. But if you dig beneath the surface, you'll see that Mae's Destination: Beautiful fully deserves its spot on this list.
