Long before I had ever heard of "shoegazer" music, I fell for a band called Starflyer 59. My first introduction to them was the Silver album, and the song that tore me up was "Blue Collar Love." What were all the words? Who cared? I softly sand along to every mellow melody, to every distorted guitar riff, and knew which song was next before it played. These songs provided the backdrop to an entirely new musical image, one that embraced the static and used it to full advantage. Almost like a Jackson Pollock painting, Silver did not give us a concrete message or lyric, no radio-friendly hit, but rather a statement that set it entirely apart and secured its spot in our nostalgia forever.
