Bananaman

Ghoti Hook were the kings of silly, but extremely good, punk rock. Bananaman is likely the epitome of that description. This 1997 regular is chock-full of great punk rock tunes from top to bottom. It's a fun and energetic ride from a band that had a super tight sound. It's pretty evident from the banana-costumed man on the cover that neither the band nor the album itself takes itself too seriously. "My Bike" is just one example of this. Pee-Wee Herman opens the track with a line from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure before Joel Bell starts waxing poetic about his bicycle. Ghoti Hook was a perfect fit for the mid-to-late '90s Tooth & Nail label. Their sound, personality, and overall appeal was right in the label's wheelhouse. Listening to Bananaman just makes me miss the Hook and that era of punk rock even more -- especially when jamming to a blistering track like "Middle Ground." This one should definitely be considered amongst Tooth & Nail's classic albums.
