Mae 2018 Fall Tour

Mae 2018 Fall Tour
Mae, Rookie of the Year, Loyals

11/8/18, at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, NC

It's always unfortunate when a favorite artist or band decides to call it quits, which is why reunions can be wonderful. Even better than a reunion, however, is when a band reunites to make new music again. The good news for Mae fans wasn't just the 10th anniversary tour for their acclaimed album, The Everglow, but brand new album Multisensory Aesthetic Experience and the supporting tour.

Opening for Mae were newly signed Tooth & Nail band Loyals and NC favorites, Rookie of the Year. I wasn't familiar with Loyals, but they brought a lot of energy to their set and I liked what I heard. I look forward to hearing more from them. I was excited to finally see Rookie of the Year live and I'm pleased to report that they did not disappoint. They played a mix of both fan favorites, like "Love Me Crazy" and "Liars and Battlelines," as well as new songs. To close out the set, they rocked the house with the classic "Poison Like Your Own."

Mae opened with new song "Sing," and then transitioned into the fan favorites "Embers and Envelopes" and "All Deliberate Speed." While I like Destination: Beautiful, I was disappointed they chose to focus heavily on this album in the set as opposed to covering their entire career. It also seemed to my ears that those songs were being played in a lower key than on the original recordings. Mae continued with my favorite song from the new album, "Our Love Is a Painted Picture," followed by "Giving It Away." They played a couple of songs from their (M)(A)(E) EPs, as well as "Anything" from The Everglow, which was my personal favorite of the night since it was the first song that I had ever heard from them. "Let It Die" and "5 Light Years" from the new album followed, which I really enjoyed, too.

Mae closed out the evening with one of their biggest songs to date, "Suspension," leaving the crowd, including this reviewer, satisfied with what had been a great night of music. It was a lot of fun to see Mae back together again and one could tell that they were happy to be back as well.

I'm very excited to see what the future holds for Mae, and I hope their new album is only the first of many. For newcomers to Mae, The Everglow is a must-listen; existing fans should check out their new album, Multisensory Aesthetic Experience.
