Jasmine
The Next Me

Album length: 10 tracks: 32 minutes, 8 seconds
Street Date: May 5, 2009

The new iShine record label targets young artists to spread the gospel to teens and tweens across the country. Now, 14-year-old Jasmine Sagginario, or simply known as Jasmine, is ready to make her mark with her debut, The Next Me. Although this is being billed as an "album," it only includes five tracks, along with karaoke versions of each.

Jasmine's rich vocals are somewhat of a highlight of the album, and are reminiscent of JoJo, although it seems the producers she worked with here have underestimated her. The bouncy pop tracks, like the title track and "Yeah," are a bit pitchy in places, whereas on the intimate ballad "Nothing Left To Say," she delivers flawlessly.

The music itself is quite well-produced and mixed. The title track is instantly catchy, and "Yeah" is definitely infectious. The Summer-y "Make a Movie," could instantly be a Radio Disney hit. "Time 2 Shine" seems like it was made to serve as somewhat of a theme song for iShine Records.

However, the lyrics are the negative part of this record. The incredibly cheesy "Make A Movie," is about…filming a movie of yourself? Or at least, that's all I got out of it. "Yeah" is also pretty vague in its message, and includes not-so-brilliant lines such as "When I just stop and think of what You have done for me/How can I say anything but yeah?"

This is a great debut pop record, given its intended audience. But for someone over the age of about 16, it's just more manufactured Radio Disney fluff. It's clear that Jasmine could have a bright career ahead of her, given her mature vocal talent. Next time, hopefully, there will be more focus on her vocals than on the production of the music.
