Young Oceans returns with a remix album of sorts, Subjects in Motion. The artist in his release announcement describes this album better than I could with this quote:
"I wanted to find out what happened when we stripped all the noise away. All the sonic acrobatics, the digital layers… all the tired tricks. I wanted to pray these prayers again with my friends. With these crazy artists . I wanted to lay on my floor again and drift away. I wanted a new peace. I wanted a new simplicity."
Young Oceans has succeeded in their venture and released a delightful 11-song album featuring many under-the-radar Christian artists. Only one song is original to this album; the rest are acoustic versions of older songs, each sung by a guest artist.
No new sound is broached by this album, but these are reimagined versions of songs from older albums. As a fan of John Mark Pantana, Josh Garrels, and The Brilliance, those tracks in particular of course stand out to me. The guest singers bring their own signature sounds to each Young Oceans original.
My only quibble is that the songs can all have a similar sound, blending in together. The Josh Garrels feature also is hard to listen to with his extreme use of falsetto. But, again, these are minor quibbles.
I love this album as background music, or as a good listen through headphones. If you appreciate the rest of the Young Oceans catalog, you'll for sure to want to give this new collection of songs a listen. While not as original or creative as their regular studio albums, this is by design. Subjects in Motion is a solid addition to Young Oceans discography, if not a great jumping in point.
