Female-fronted "chick rock" band Superchick has been making an impact in both the Christian and mainstream music world, ever since their debut, Karaoke Superstars. Several of their songs, like "One Girl Revolution," "Get Up," and "It's On," to name a few, have been featured in multiple movies, TV shows, and ads all over America, not to mention their radio success. After two and a half years, Superchick is finally ready to release their fourth studio album, Rock What You Got, on June 24.
To gear up for this highly anticipated release, Superchick is releasing three (yes, THREE) singles simultaneously to different radio formats. All three of these songs appear on this digital-only EP. The EP kicks off with "Hold," the album's CHR single. The song has a midtempo pace that builds and builds until the last minute. The lyrics are a bit cliché at times, but the amazing musical arrangement is enough to save it.
The following track, and the Christian Rock radio single, "Hey Hey," is a classic (and expected) Superchick anthem. The song is sure to become a concert favorite, with its infectious chorus and fist-pumping tune. The song opens with an '80s throwback verse, leading into the rock-driven chorus. However, parts of the song may come across as cheesy and juvenile, especially when Tricia Brock sings, "But I won't bow down even if the whole world thinks I'm crazy," in a near whisper.
The AC single, "Crawl (Carry Me Through)" closes the EP. This song is a rock-influenced power ballad, very reminiscent of the title track from Beauty From Pain. Like "Hold," the song is very climactic, until it reaches its peak at the final chorus. The song serves as a perfect closer.
If this EP is anything like what Rock What You Got will be, listeners can expect classic Superchick at its finest, with a great mix of upbeat rock songs and slower tracks.
