With months of delays, Grits' ninth and rumored final album, Quarantine, finally sees its release. The result is an album that's somewhat of a mixed bag. If it really is the final Grits album, then it's quite a disappointment. Actually, it's a medicore album all together. It seems that Grits is on the right track by trying to get back to their albums that lead up to the mixed reception that Reiterate received, but what follows is weak lyrics and a project that sounds as though no time and effort was put into the final produt.
"Fresh" starts things off decently enough with a little autotune put to use and serves as good opener for the album. The next couple of songs continue to make the album strong with the anthem "Do it Again" and the dance flavored "New Life." Things begin to decline, however, with "Neverland," which feels as though it shouldn't be on a Grits album as it features mainly female vocals that sound similar to that of a lead female singer of a 90's rock band. Lyrically, it was surprising to hear the words "Life's a slut all dressed up with the nicest butt," on "We All We Got." I felt it was inappropriate, even if it's used to prove a point, given the spiritual messages that Grits have always offered. "OMG" continues surprising lyrics with "oh my god" being repeated over and over. Things come to an end with a very bland song, titled "Quarantine."
Being a fan of Grits' previous work, I was highly anticipating their final album, and if this is it, it is a major disappointment. With only ten tracks, the record seems like it's over before it really gets started. And spirtual content is spread through or hinted at in some songs, but never fully addressed. I can only hope that Grits will make one more follow up project, but right now I will bask in the days of when a song like "Ooh Ahh" was what they were known for.
